7-Day Great Migration Safari and Mara River Crossings

Fly into Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), where your guide meets you on arrival. Depending on your flight time, there may be a chance for a brief orientation drive around Arusha or a visit to a local cultural site. The evening is yours to settle in, enjoy dinner, and get a good night's rest before the safari begins in earnest the next morning.

Suggested lodge: Mateves Boutique Hotel or Four Points By Sheraton Hotel—both are reliable, centrally located mid-range options in Arusha with good food and easy access for an early-morning departure.

Depart: After breakfast, around 7:00 AM

Head south from Arusha toward Tarangire National Park — roughly a 2-hour drive on tarmac. Enter through the main gate and spend the full day exploring the park. The ancient baobab trees, open woodland, and the Tarangire River create one of Tanzania's most dramatic landscapes.

Morning game drive: Elephant herds are virtually guaranteed — Tarangire has one of the highest elephant densities in Africa. Look for lions, leopards, fringe-eared oryx, and the park's exceptional birdlife — over 550 species recorded here.

Packed lunch in the field, then continue with an afternoon drive as herds of zebra, wildebeest, and buffalo gather near the river at golden hour.

An early departure toward the Ngorongoro Conservation Area — about 2.5 hours from Tarangire. Descend into the crater by mid-morning for one of the most extraordinary game drives in Africa. The 260 km² caldera shelters around 25,000 permanent resident animals — lion, elephant, black rhino, hippo, flamingo, wildebeest, and zebra all in one incredible bowl.

Game drive inside the crater (9:00 AM–1:00 PM): Stop at the hippo pool, scan the grassland for the rare black rhino, and look for lion prides near the salt lake. Picnic lunch inside the crater.

Ascend by 2:00 PM, then continue west and descend into the Serengeti. A short evening game drive en route to the lodge as the golden plains open up before you.

A full day exploring the northern Serengeti — one of the most wildlife-rich and scenically dramatic parts of the entire ecosystem. The landscape here shifts from open plains to rocky escarpments and riverine forest along the Mara River, creating a variety of habitats and excellent game viewing even outside migration season.

Morning game drive (6:00 AM–noon): Focus on the Mara River banks for lion, leopard, elephant, and crocodile. Large resident prides of lion are a feature of the north, and the area holds some of the biggest tuskers in Tanzania. If the migration herds are present, your guide will track their movements and position you for the best possible viewing.

Afternoon drive (3:00–6:30 PM): Follow the wildebeest and zebra herds across the northern plains. Topi, eland, and giraffe are plentiful, and cheetah sightings are common on the open ground. Sundowners with a view of the Mara River to close out the day.

Overnight in the northern Serengeti.

The day the whole safari has been building toward. Spend the full day at the Mara River waiting for the wildebeest to cross. Your guide will read the herd movements and position you at the best vantage point.

Morning session (6:00 AM–noon): Early morning is often the most active time. Thousands of wildebeest gather nervously on the banks before the first animal triggers a stampede into the water. Crocodiles wait below the surface. The noise, dust, and sheer scale of it is overwhelming.

Afternoon session (2:00–6:30 PM): Crossings can happen multiple times in a day. Stay patient and stay close — your guide will know when and where to move. Even on quieter crossing days the northern Serengeti delivers outstanding wildlife with large lion prides, elephants, and giraffes in abundance.

Overnight in the northern Serengeti.

A morning game drive along the Mara River to catch any early crossings or predator activity, then pack up and drive south through the Lobo area toward the central Serengeti. The drive itself passes through beautiful, varied terrain and offers excellent game viewing along the way — keep an eye out for cheetah on the open Loliondo plains and large elephant herds near the Lobo Valley.

Arrive at the central Serengeti by mid-afternoon for a final evening game drive in the Seronera Valley.

One last early morning game drive in the Seronera Valley before packing up and beginning the drive back to Arusha — approximately 5–6 hours via the Ngorongoro highlands. The scenery on the return is beautiful, with sweeping highland views as you climb back through the conservation area. Arrive in Arusha by early evening for a farewell dinner or an overnight before your flight home.
